He is perhaps best known for his second book, Animalia published inand third book The Eleventh Hour which was released in Can I please have the fourth place at that table? There is a fairy. View all 3 comments. I love the words and the way the author uses such a vast vocabulary, it’s a great book for animwlia. Now I do believe and even realise that Animalia has a lot of what I would label “kid appeal” but for someone like me, with less than stellar eyesight, the sheer masses of hidden objects can easily prove to be a bit massively overwhelming at best.
Sure, a world like ventriloquist is not as easy as a word like “van,” but that’s the point of teaching kids. Archived from the original on 2 October I find that I’m still identifying things linked to the letters as I nase through this book. Kids will love that.

Giraffes are entertained by a gibbon playing a guitar. Abounding with fanciful, gorgeously detailed art, it is an alphabet book, a guessing game, and a virtual feast for the eyes. Animalia is an ABC book, but with a twist. I also now own a miniature paperback version of this, courtesy of the Herald Sun’s kids book promotion: A leprechaun joins lions in grae,e library.
Both kids read this with joy. But there are also several other drawings that start with gtaeme consonant. So much time goes into them. Childrens stylized illustrated picture book of animals and small people hiding in a Where’s Waldo type situation. Wow, did I baase this book as a child. The X page is a bit of a cheat since none of the words included start with the letter X, but I give Base a pass since he goes above and beyond with V, of all letters.
Every time I read it again, I find more pictures to identify with whatever letter I’m reading. Winner of the Dromkeen Medal Sometimes I get out my copy and look for the objects in each book just for the fun of it. Animaliw a depiction of Damocles in an alphabet book for kids? This book is a great read-aloud for story time with toddlers and preschoolers.
I spent many grarme afternoons and evenings like so as a child. This book would make a lovely gift for year olds, and I very much enjoyed pouring over it myself. Graeme Base is an exceptional artist. I think this will be a book that they can enjoy for many years.

Some of the reviewers mentioned violence in the book. Man, if only this book could have time-traveled back to my young reading days. The numerous inclusion of items that begin with each featured letter scattered throughout each page makes the entire book a treasure hunt. While I didn’t enjoy that book quite as much I’m sad that it appears t I found a copy for a friend’s grandchild.
